Microwaves

I have always had a love-hate relationship with microwaves. I hate the fact that when I am going to heat a mug of tea or a plate of food, the dishware gets hot but my food doesn't. I never wondered what made this happen as the microwave was something very common to me. I grew up with microwaves all around me as if they had always existed. Never wondering on how they worked, and why they heat up food as they do. This has risen much controversy, and ignorant people complain about the "useless and inefficient" way microwaves heat our food. This is specially evident in meme webpages such as 9gag or Reddit , i which people criticize different things in our everyday lives. They aren't aware of the science behind it, and rather name microwaves as: "scumbags."

Bee Wilson narrates the circumstances in which the microwave was introduced to modern times. She goes beyond explaining how people acknowledged its introduction, but also how it works. I have always been curious about it, but never payed much attention to looking for the information. Microwaves are waves, that can "only penetrate food by around 4 to 5 cm" (Pg. 103). Nevertheless, microwaves aren't freaky technologies as they "obey the same laws of physics as spit roast." People are left behind in old technologies, and when new ones appear they expect them to be perfectly flawless. They fail to understand that science is an advancing technology, that we still haven't achieved absolute knowledge. The thing is that many people criticize it, but don't even use it correctly. As Wilson says, "the real drawback of the microwave is not with the device itself but with how it is used." (Pg. 107). It makes me laugh at how people don't give it enough credit, but still fail to use it correctly. 

This has lead to the industry of unhealthy fast-food to develop. Precooked, microwave freezes meals govern the refrigerators in supermarket. The act of cooking isn't as valued in everyday lives as it was before. It isn't given as much importance as before, and as Wilson said, "the microwave is not used as a form of cooking, but as a way of avoiding cooking." and has "provided a way to eat without the sociability of sitting around a family table. " (Pg. 110) The microwave consequently has an effect not only on the way we cook, and its importance on everyday life but on how we interact as families and communities as we did before on the dinner table.

Cruelty

It is incredible how cruel humans can be. I have never had much pity or been rather positive towards humanity. I have said it many times before a subject like this comes up. Humans are selfish creatures, that seek whats best for themselves without much benevolence or respect towards others, specially towards those inferior to them. I have been reading the chapter about fire in Consider the Fork and came across a not medieval, but medieval like human or animal powered roasting spit.

In order to slow cook food, people since the middle of the fifteenth century in Europe people started using roasting spits. It was an arduous labor that took at least 10 hours to complete. It was not only tiring, but those turning it "must have near-roasted themselves" (Pg. 88). It was the specialty in the large mansions of the medieval wealthy, servants would "charr their faces and tire their arms to satisfy the royal appetite for roast capons and ducks and venison and beef, crammed in cubbyholes to the side of the fireplace" (Pg. 90). The onerous job of turning the spit for hours was so accepted that the job even had a proper name: the "turnspit" or "turn broach". It was the position for the poorest, youngest and animals to take. The worker changed through time. First, young boys used to have the job, then dogs, then geese (as they had deemed to be dumber, and easier to trick for the job) and then african american boys. 

It enrages me that people could have been so cruel to animals, and especially other human beings just for the sake of their big fat bellies. They should be charged with gluttony in the inferno. It is absurd to have dogs walk indefinitely for twelve hours. Turnspit dogs "used to hide themselves or run away when they observes indications that there was to be roast for dinner" (Pg. 92). The cruelest I believe is that fact, than when animal rights supporters, made it illegal to have turnspit dogs, they "had been replaces at the fire by young black children"(Pg. 90). There is not modesty in the European high class of the time. With each more act of egocentrism I think I dislike humanity a little more each time. It is simply amazing how people can do that just for food.

What's Normal?

It is really ironic in how we strictly need food to survive, but it is what kills us too. Food can make you fat, or skinny. You can die from obesity or anorexia. You can be gluten intolerant, or peanut intolerant. You can die from a heart attack due to the food you eat. In other words: Food kills us, but keeps us alive. Furthermore, in Consider the Fork by Bee Wilson we learn that the way we eat food affects our bodies in greater ways than we can imagine.

Our eating habits have changed a lot through time, and specially with the fork and the knife. To us it is a more civilized way of eating, and proper too. Nevertheless, our bodies weren't build to eat the way we do nowadays. Usually people would "stuff-and-cut"(Pg. 84). This is that with one hand you "grasp the food. Then clamp the end of it forcefully between your teeth. Finally, separate the main hunk of food from the piece in your mouth" (Pg. 86). People used to eat like this, which is why the "End-to-end" bite position is much more useful than the nowadays normal overbite. It makes grasping food with your teeth much easier, however with the arrival of the fork and the knife things changed. We are now able cut food into little pieces and eat it without grasping or using your teeth to yank things. 

Consequently, our teeth start to slide down and move as we grow older and our jaw develops it "adapts" to the way we eat. (I put "adapt" in quotations mainly because our bodies don't change from use and disuse of our organs or limbs). Furthermore, as Wilson clearly states "the overbite is not a product of natural selection" (Pg. 87) It is absolutely normal for our teeth to move over time. For instance, if you don't wear your retainer after your braces have been removed, most likely your teeth are going to get crooked again. I never, ever had thought on how food has influenced my teeth or my body besides getting too fat or too skinny and the consequences that come with that

Through this book I have learned little details on how cooking, food and the way we eat has changed through time and has influenced us in many different aspects. Human cooking has changed and made us change too. It is really interesting how just the way we eat changed our teeth structure, and perception of what is a "normal bite position" and what is not. Food and cooking affect even the deepest corners of our everyday lives. It not only influences our food, cooking, eating manners and body weight, but our body structure too. It is simply bewildering. Imagine this: how would only eating liquid food influence our teeth through time? Would we loose them completely? Would they shrink? I might never know the answer to that, but I keep wondering: what else does cooking affect?

How We Came To Be


Have you ever wondered why we cook the way we do? Why we roast things, and boil things like we do? I had never really given it much thought. I paid attention to the fact that we roast and boil mainly because that is what we had too. This book called Consider the Fork byBee Wilson book has enlighten me in the history of cooking in ways I never thought it would have. There are many things about cooking that I just assumed were normal all the time, and that cooking had been changing through ages as technology advanced. However, never paying attention to the details behind that cooking, the burden and arduous work it took in being a cook. It was come to my attention how fire has influenced our ways of cooking.

Can yoWilson states that "the English predilection for roast beef was not, at root, a question of taste; it was a question of resources" (Pg. 82) Imagine if the English hadn't had so much firewood to spare, roasting wouldn't have been such a British custom. It is weird to think that due to our resources and not our wit we are what we are. I have always absentmindedly thought people in medieval times just cooked like we did. They had the same basic utensils like us: pots, pans, forks, knifes etc. I had never thought on the tedious task cooking with fire had. It wasn't simple at all, but it was a matter of what resources they had at hand to develop a meal in order to survive. Basic cooking before was rudimentary, and this book has taught me so many things I had never thought on before. It has opened my eyes to things I wouldn't usually have thought of before.

The Changing Knife

Very small things can have a great impact. Things change constantly and usually it the little details that make things so different. Would you expect old and rudimentary table manners change to the strict and elegant etiquette we follow nowadays due to the impression of one single person? It is rather amazing how the world works and how we don't need a lot to change a lot. For instance, sometimes when you get into an argument with someone who's opinions you value, and they tell  you about a flaw you have: you change. If it someone who's opinion matters a lot to me, and it makes me realize my flaw, I will change it. 


Did you know why we use round, not so sharp knifes to eat? Bee Wilson tells us in her book Consider the Fork that when a Cardinal "witnessed a dinner guest using the sharp tip of a double-edged knife to pick his teeth" (Pg. 59) food manners across Europe revolutionized dramatically. From here on, people started being disgusted at "taking meat from a common dish using fingers" (Pg.60) and many different antique manners that up to the point were considered normal and decent. Knife's tips were now starting to be rounder and having only one side sharpened. It is amazing how the thought of one man changed the thinking of thousands of others too. This tends to happen a lot, and the knife example opened my mind to thought on how people go with the crowd all the time. The common phrase "go with the flow" is true as people's choices are usually influenced by the decisions of others.

This reminds me of my AP Psychology class in which we studied conformity. Solomon Asch, conducted an experiment in which he had a subject tell which of two lines was the longest. Usually, when alone he would answer correctly, however when 5 other people intentionally (without him knowing) said the incorrect answer, he conformed with them and "went with the flow." The cutting knife example is non relevant but it is a good example to portray how people conform and go with what others say just in order of not saying the contrary. How a priest thought revolutionized table manners all around the globe. The idea of one man changed the idea of millions. Interesting how humans work isn't it?

Cooking Chemistry

I love cooking and it's one of my favorites hobbies. The cooking books I am used to are all about recipes and when I saw the cover of Consider the Fork: A History of How We Cook and Eat, it really called my attention. I had never seen something about the history of cooking and how things have changed until bring modern cooking.  Nevertheless, I had never paid much thought on how we came to know cooking as it is nowadays. I always imaged people in middle ages with copper pots, cooking more rudimentarily than us, but never gave much thought to the details of cooking.  This first chapter has brought me with a lot of insight on how pots and pans came to be today, and specially what called my attention was the discovery of stainless steel.

Have you ever thought the chemistry behind why our food sticks to our pans? I absentmindedly add oil or butter to my non-teflon pans so my food doesn't stick. This book made me realize why my food sticks to the pan. Thing that really opened my mind. Proteins from our food bond with molecules from the metal in our pans not only making it stick to the metal, but also gain that metal after taste to it. According to Wilson, "stickiness happens when food bonds with the surface of the pan" (Pg. 32), so in order to prevent food from sticking you have to "stirring [the food] it so vigilantly that it doesn't get a chance to stick, or by introducing a protective layer between the food and the pan" (Pg. 32). Only after Teflon was found this problem was solved. Teflon is short name for a molecule made solely from carbon and fluorine atoms. Their attractiveness is so high that they rather bond to themselves than to other elements, making it non-stick, and providing the food with an insulation layer to prevent the metal aftertaste. I had never in my life though about this before. I never thought it had to do with chemistry, but now I do. 

Science is everywhere, and without it we wouldn't be where we are nowadays. I had never realized how important it was until I realized it affected very ordinary things like cooking. To people cooking is something common and mandatory; it is everything but technological. To some it is primitive and we cant live without it, but cooking is a science as much as it is an art. Cooking pots as simple as they look have their science, and chemistry. Without science, we would still be cooking from pits in the ground.

Creativity in Scarcity

The human race has amazed me with its innovative ideas through out history and how the world as we know it nowadays is due to crazy people with crazy ideas. This comes to when I first came across pit cooking and my mind wandered of thinking "who came up with that idea?" I mean, when most people look at a pit oven they think of the the stone age, and how people were so primitive. However, when I look at it, I just wonder that if someone was so primitive how come they invented something so creative and innovative for their time? Think about it. Who on earth would have thought of cooking in the ground thirty thousand years ago? 

All of this thinking made me think that when people have the least, they are the most creative. This is true for various situations. When you have everything, or well almost everything, you are lazier and don't have to be so resourceful as when you have nothing. For instance, this old proverb says " give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Here, when the man is given everything (the fish) why would he bother to learning how to fish, but when the man has nothing (no fish), he will learn how to fish and consequently come with a more ingenious idea. Those living centuries ago had almost no technology, and didn't live with abundance. Therefore, being resourceful was their only salvation and way to advance to the future. The author of Consider the Fork, Bee Wilson makes note of this. Here she says that "no method was as ingenious as the technology of hot-stone cookery practiced across the globe, starting at least 30,000 years ago" (Pg. 6). 

To our eyes creating the pit oven was a very small achievement, but the amount of thinking and creativity was much more than we give them credit. It is more important nowadays to find a cure for cancer than a new way of cooking a long time ago. However, we have a lot more resources and tools to use therefore making the process easier for us and faster, consequently requiring much less thinking. It is like using a calculator and not using it. The amount of thinking we need is less, therefore  a stone age man creating an over out of stones is a much greater achievement than many things nowadays. It is truly a relative matter and it has to be seen through objective eyes, but their accomplishments are truly amazing. If humans could still use their thinking like they did before, we would be a lot more advanced than we are right now.

Security or Government?

I was reading the OP-ED article by the mother of an autistic child, Lori McIlwain in the New York Times, in which she encompasses the topic of autistic children wandering around and getting lost. She commented on how this happens in between classes at school. She recalls different cases in which autistic children left school, wandered into a highway and were tragically hit by the passing cars. She not only takes a position against the government for not funding enough for these common incidents, and doing so for elders with Alzheimer's. I know it is unfair that the government doesn't pay that much attention to this cases, but I couldn't help and think about security. 

There is no way in hell I can run away from school without vandalizing the school gates and not getting caught. In order to leave school I have to pass through one of the main gates, and they security guys are not going to let me out just because I want to. In other words, my school is a jail. There is no way I can escape from it. This led me to think how children can escape their schools? Isn't there a front gate? Isn't there some sort of entrance they have to cross in order to get out? Maybe the difference relies on the fact that these children live in America. The place were there are no gates in schools, probably because it is not dangerous and necessary, unlike here in Bogota, were children are at risk of being mugged. Furthermore, being a school that accepts autistic kids, and is away of their common occurrences why don't they implement gates? 

The root of the problem is the government, I know, but there are others ways to prevent unwanted deaths and missing children. The government though being the cause for lack of funding, isn't the only one that can potentially help autistic kids. For instance, the school (a private one in this case) may help by installing a closed perimeter or circuit, and taking the usual security measures to keep children away from lakes and pools. I understand this article was written by a suffering mother, who lives to tell the unfairness of the issue. However, there are different ways of solving the problem.

Not So Clever

Jargonistic: Nonsensical, incoherent, or meaningless talk.
Hahaha. I recall all of those childish fights I had with my friends when we were younger. One, they didn't make sense at all, and two they were for everything but important things. They used to go like this: "You're stupid. Oh yeah. Well you are more stupid." Pathetic isn't it? Well that's what tends to happen a lot of times when we are in an argument and you're out of clever retorts and ways to snap back at your opponent. This not only happens to young naive children that don't know how to argue, it might also happen to grown up me. In chapter 20 Heinrichs teaches us about snappy and astute comebacks when we are out of thought. He might have not realized that his tips might tip the other way and make his readers fools out of themselves. 

According to Heinrichs these figures of speech will "arm you with systematic thing and prefab wit so you never find yourself at a loss again" (Pg. 208). This techniques are very cliché, but somehow they work. Rather than mumbling idiotic retorts and losing the battle. Nevertheless, this can come the other way, and rather be portrayed as defenseless and foolish. For instance, the "speak-around" technique, which "substitutes a description for the proper name" (pg. 210) may be wrongly interpreted and  be something like my innocent argument above.  Likewise, this is very common. For example this past weekend I watched a lot of TV to relax and take a break from school. I opted for watching The Simpsons, one of my favorite shows that make me laugh a lot. I found this priceless argument between Homer Simpson and the Alien Kang: 

Homer: You, one-eyed, two-timing (beep, beep)! I'm gonna (beep)!
Kang: Oh yeah?! Well (Beep) you, hyperbolic parabaloid! (bleep) yo mama!

It is kinda funny, and it is the perfect way to exhibit how Heinrichs tips might go wrong. They are a great way to win arguments, but they are also a great way to make you look like an idiot. Hopefully you make a good arguer and don't make yourself the former.

Over Estimating Ourselves

After reading chapters 15-16 from Thank You For Arguing and being introduced to the fouls and fallacies we tend to make in our everyday lives. Funny enough, we use them in ways that harm us rather than help us. Likewise, I think there are two main reasons on why we tend to make these mistakes while arguing: 


  1. We don't know the basis of rhetoric. We don't know how it works and much less we don't know the methods it employs in order to be a good arguer. 
  2. We overestimate ourselves; we think we know how to argue when we really don't.
Consequently, we lose arguments or these turn into fights many times due to this. In this chapter we learned about Heinrich's first and only do-not-do. According to him, "never argue the inarguable" (Pg. 158). Out of this single rule different mistakes (he likes to call rhetorical fouls) branch out. Using any one of the fouls in a discussion will take you nowhere, and "simply make the deliberative argument impossible"(Pg.170). The problem is that we tend to use fallacies and this so called fouls in our daily lives more than we think. Rhetoric comes almost naturally to us  and we tend to follow a rudimentary pattern in the way we discuss and talk. Nonetheless, rhetoric is the art of organized and consice persuassion. Without proper education in rhetoric we can't develop our skills and won't be able to develop our instinctive argumentation methods.

 typically a suggestive or disparaging one.
One typical foul or fallacy we tend to make in our everyday lives is the one of authority. Older people tend to abuse of their power and try to use it against its opponent (incorrectly). Not they only commit a fallacy of ommiting a choice, but they make a foul by using the incorrect tense. This is the classical father and 5 year old daughter "eat your vegetables because I say so" scenario: 

Dad: Eat your spinach
Me: No, I don't like it. 
Dad: Well eat it anyhow. I say so.
Me: Who are you to tell me what to do?
Dad: Your father. You live in my home, under my rules, now you have to eat them.
Me: Daddy, but I don't like them! (Starts crying) 

In this case the persuader, also known as  the father threatens me to eat my  vegetables without providing me with another choice. Furthermore, he employs the incorrect tense, the present. According to Heinrich's "it is more difficult to use the present tense to make a choice about the future." (Pg. 163) He should be using the future tense rather than the present or past tense. Nevertheless, instead of trying to ease me, persuade me, or seduce me into eating my food he tries to abuse of his power trying to force me. Instead of convincing me, he made his five year old  daughter cry. He didn't give my any choices to pick from, and he used the present tense. Two strikes in one. One more to go, Dad. 

"Que Sí, Que No, Que Sí, Que No y Punto"

 Stop, stop, stop and stop. After reading chapters 10-12 from Thank You For Arguing I could only think: "wait there a tad Heinrichs, I need some time to digest everything you're saying." I had to control the urge I had to take out my notebook and scribble notes about everything he had to say about rhetoric because my post-its just weren't enough. I knew rhetoric was a complex topic that contained many information, but I never knew it was going to be like this. Fine, maybe I'm exaggerating a little, but it is still a lot of information to process. 

Heinrichs talks about this and that, and then this and that, and how you can do this but not that. It is very interesting (not to say useful too), but it's simply too overwhelming to take in all over at once. We were introduced to very handy concepts indeed. I already knew about passive voice, but I learned about facetious humor, wit, urbane humor, banter, backfiring, labeling, The Rejection, The Commonplace Label, The Advantageous,  redefining, babbling, framing amongst others.  

I was rather impressed when Heinrichs mentioned "babbling", which is "when your audience repeats the same thing over and over"(Pg.107). I never knew this silly argumentation technique (that the most pathetic arguers employ) is rather useful. I used to argue with my sister like that when I was younger and she was trying to convince me to wash her dishes, and rather than trying to persuade me or seduce me she just begged me. Clearly that didn't work out very well: 
 Facetious: (Adj.)  treating serious issues
with deliberately inappropriate humor; flippant.

Her: Wash my dishes.
Me: Pff, no. 
Her: Why not?
Me: Because I don't want to. 
Her: Why not?
Me: Because I don't feel like doing so.
Her: But why?
Me: I don't want to. I'm busy.
Her: Please? 
Me: No 
Her: Pretty please with a cherry on top? 
Me: No is no. Bye. 

Would she had known about Heinrich's book, she might have tried to persuade me in a different way. When you or your opponent babble, it is most likely that their/you are "probably mouthing a commonplace"(Pg. 107). A commonplace, according to Heinrichs is "the ground the audience currently stands on" (Pg.107), that means the audience's "beliefs and values, the views it holds in common"(Pg.100). Therefore, if my sister would have understood what my commonplace was and tried using it in her favor, she might have won what she wanted. Not even, if she would have offered me a reward I would've washed the dishes happily without having to go through all that rhetoric.

Even though there is too much information and many of it is confusing it is the only way to master rhetoric. I have to suck it up and learn about argumentation methods instead of complaining about being overwhelmed. With only following some of Heinrich's rules one can do wonders to persuade or seduce or people. We can not only win huge and very important arguments, but we can also win little arguments that could give us a night off dishwashing.

The Nitty Gritty


Chapters 7-9 from Thank You For Arguing gave me  the specific tools to improve my discussion methods. The last chapter dealt in most part with how to channel emotions such as anger, and how to play with them. I can control and use my own emotions, and my audience's emotions to help me convince them. If I am clever enough, this book will provide me with enough tools to hide beneath my sleeve. It might make me win each and every argument I have convincing people of what I want or believe in. 

One of the first things I now know I have to change is my emotions. I have had that clear since I read the first chapter of this book, however Heinrichs hadn't gotten into real detail about what to do about channeling my emotions. He says that "A persuader who apparently struggles to hold back her emotions will get better results than one who displays her emotions all over the floor of a bank" (Pg. 82) . Yeah, oops. I was the out of control, crying girl when I was younger and argued with my older sister every time. Had I known this information I might have won twice the arguments I got into. I used to cry when I got mad, or got too sentimental.

I recall one fight I had with my sister about who could get to sleep with our dog that night. I was already angry at her for not letting me be with het too as she would spend the whole afternoon locked inside of her room, and not let me get near it. Therefore, I decided to start an argument because I knew I owned the right to spend some time with the dog too. I was still very young and naive, while she was older and more knowledgable in the art of manipulation. I tried being all fancy and trying to negotiate a deal with her, but I failed humiliatingly and proceeded to get very sentimental and angry. Now I realize I could have done things differently, and I know I won't "use fancy language when [I] get emotional" (Pg. 90), because i'll end up losing.

Furthermore, the funniest and most realistic to use was the personal sacrifice. In some sort of way I have already employed this technique though in a more rudimentary and obvious manner. I tried persuading my sister by giving her pity of myself, I placed myself in the "poor puppy" situation, doing the doggy eyes as well. Though I failed because my sister is hard as a rock, it could have worked in another person. Now that I know how to elaborate this tool more throughly I know how to influence my sister into giving me the dog, or manipulating anyone in a different situation.

Ditto

After reading chapters 5 and 6 from Thank you for Arguing I started to realize that the fact of fitting in is not always such a bad thing, and that it is a broader topic than what I thought. My opinions on the concept of fitting in connotes negativity to me. I have seen it as teenagers changing their looks to be liked by their classmates, and nothing else. I've always seen people suffer by trying to change who they are, and in what they believe only to be accepted by others and not have to feel being left behind. 


This concept of being "cool" and "uncool" has never been of my likeness, but now these chapters have opened my eyes. Now I see two things: one is that decorum or the propriety and good taste in conduct or appearance, is not always bad and second that fitting in and decorum though they might be similar are not always the same thing. Decorum, or also known as etiquette is also part of our everyday lives even though many people connote etiquette only to wearing fancy dresses and having elegant manners in a party. The same thing goes for fitting in. Though many people, such as me attribute it solely to high school teenagers, it is used in a variety of occasions as well. 
 
Decorum is used in every event, as you cannot walk into the grammy's wearing jeans, or into a catholic church wearing only a swimsuit, you would be stared weirdly if you walked into school wearing a tux. It is plainly weird and wrong. Likewise, Heinrichs says that to have decorum you have to "act the way your audience expects you to act - not necessarily like your audience" (pg. 69). This means that you don't have to mimic what everyone is doing, but rather do as people expect you to act. Here is when I realized decorum and fitting in were just a tad different. Nonetheless, Justin Bieber came to Bogotá, Colombia not more than a week ago, and ever since there has been news about him everyday, because he vandalized a street with graffiti. Many Colombians are furious, and it's one big of a scandal. Justin didn't act the way he was supposed to act, but rather defied his audiencewhich therefore led him into trouble. Would've Justin graffitied in another place, or someplace were it was not illegal and he had permission and not in a public street, things might have been different. 

As said in the book, decorum "has to do with the ability to match the audience's beliefs" (Pg. 59), and it "follows the audience's rules"(Pg. 70). The problem is that Justin didn't do that and that's why there is so much controversy about his graffiti. He didn't do what he was supposed to do, but rather did something that made his audience react negatively. Consequently, I believe this exhibits the importance of decorum not only in real life but in arguments too because without it not only it might turn out of hand and become a fight, but you might also fail to convince your audience of anything.

Wrong Wrong and Wrong

Oops. I have never realized how wrong I was all along. It was enough just to read the first page of Thank You For Arguing by Jay Heinrichs to make me realize how many of my arguments are pathetic, to say the least. I don't know how to truly argue, which is why I think this book is going to be a great way to teach me new things, and mostly to help me win more arguments in the future.

After pondering back in time and thinking on my past arguments, I found that either I defend myself and prove my point quite well, or I get too sentimental and sadly spoil my point of view, and lose: Oops. Rather than trying to "Stimulate my audience's emotions. Change its opinions. Get it to act" (Pg.22).  I many times overwhelm them with emotion, such as anger, or try to shove my opinions down their throats rather than trying to discretely convince them. Oops again, this is strike one. 

As I said before my feelings many times get in the middle of my argument, many times turning it into a fight. I recall my uncountable discussions with my sister that morphed into fights. Nonetheless, this used to happen when I was much younger and as she is four years older than me, she possessed a great advantage over myself. She always knew best and knew more than me. She had the best comebacks, which made me furious because I thought it was very unfair. I felt that just because I was younger It didn't mean I was stupider, so I used to get very any at her snappy comebacks and "I know everything 'cause I’m older" attitude. Afterwards, no matter what we had been arguing about, I started to cry out of anger. I didn’t start sobbing, tears simply started pouring out of my eyes and there was no way I could control it. Nowadays, though its not as exaggerated I tend to have the same reaction when I get really mad in an argument. I start crying, and it’s horrible.

Strike two, and strike three. I’m out. I really need to learn how to control myself in many situations and learn to truly persuade people without my feelings getting in the way. I failed in my methods once again. I need to learn how to differentiate an argument from a fight too. All of this makes me love the book even more, and is the reason why I think this book is going to become my new best friend. It will turn me into a master of persuasion.
